More often than not, bad hair days are extremely avoidable. Hair requires maintenance to keep it lustrous and strong. Here are a few tips for to keep your hair looking great no matter what your age.

Take time to groom."You can't get away with bed head anymore," advises Townsend. "Your hair should be soft and touchable." Try Pantene Pro-V Smooth Humidity Protection Leave-In Cream ($3.99).

Go long... or short. Find a length where hair looks healthiest.

Smooth strands. To tame unruly frizz, stylist Andy LeCompte, who's coiffed Penélope Cruz, suggests an in-salon Brazilian Blowout ($300-$500).

Keep it natural. Negin Zand, who highlights Jennifer Aniston, advises not dyeing more than two shades darker or lighter than what you were born with.

Mix colors. "Multifaceted color, a rich tone with shimmer, adds elegance," says Debra Messing's colorist, Rona O'Connor. "Start with a base color and weave in lowlights one or two shades apart."

Add radiance. "Fine highlights around your hairline will create a youthful glow," says Tracey Cunningham, who is responsible for Gwyneth Paltrow's blonde locks.
